Planning a wedding in North East

Castles above wide sandy beaches, a Norman cathedral and the bridges of the Tyne give the North East some of England's most memorable backdrops. The region is compact enough that couples can marry in the countryside and still have guests stay in the city.

Settings across the region

Northumberland has a long, quiet coastline with castles at Bamburgh and Alnwick, plus Northumberland National Park, Kielder and sections of Hadrian's Wall. It is also known for dark skies, which can make a winter evening wedding special. Durham's cathedral and castle are a World Heritage Site, and County Durham includes the North Pennines. Newcastle and Gateshead offer the Quayside and city venues, while Teesside has a mix of urban spaces and easy access to the North York Moors.

Country houses, hotels, barns and coastal venues are all popular choices.

Getting there

The A1 is the main road through the region, and the East Coast Main Line connects Newcastle, Durham and Darlington with London and Scotland. Newcastle International Airport is convenient for guests flying in. Rural Northumberland is sparsely populated, so plan transport and accommodation for guests carefully.

Tips for planning

• Coastal weather can be breezy and cool even in summer, so ask about indoor spaces and wraps or blankets for outdoor drinks.
• Daylight is long in midsummer and short in winter, which affects your photography timings.
• Prices vary with the day of the week and season. Off-peak dates can make popular venues more achievable.
• Some suppliers travel across the whole region and into Yorkshire or Cumbria, so ask about coverage.

Civil ceremonies in England must take place at a register office or approved premises, and you give notice at your local register office. The register office for your area can confirm the details.
