Planning a wedding in Teesside

Teesside is an area rather than a traditional county, taking in the towns around the River Tees such as Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Redcar, Billingham and Thornaby. It has a proud industrial history, a stretch of coastline and some very attractive countryside right on its doorstep, which gives couples a broader range of settings than they might expect.

Middlesbrough is the largest town, recognisable by its Transporter Bridge, and has hotels and function spaces for larger celebrations. Stockton has a wide high street and riverside areas, and Hartlepool has a historic quayside with a maritime feel. On the coast, Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a Victorian resort with its pier and cliff lift, and Marske and Redcar offer long sandy beaches. To the south, Roseberry Topping and the edge of the North York Moors bring hills, villages and moorland views, with Yarm and Eaglescliffe offering a more traditional market-town feel.

Venue types

Couples here choose from hotels, country houses on the edge of the moors, golf clubs, converted farm buildings, coastal venues and community spaces. Many local caterers and entertainers are used to big family celebrations and evening parties with large guest numbers.

Getting there

The A19 and A66 are the main roads, and the A1(M) is a short drive west. Darlington, on the East Coast Main Line, is nearby, with connecting trains to Middlesbrough and other towns. Teesside International Airport is close to Darlington and Stockton.

Practical tips

• Prices vary with the day of the week and the season.
• Coastal photographs can be breezy, so plan timings around the weather and the light.
• Teesside straddles more than one local authority, so for a civil ceremony give notice at the register office for where you live and confirm your venue is approved premises.
