Northumberland's broad beaches and dunes, castles on the skyline, Hadrian's Wall and the hills of Northumberland National Park all lend themselves to striking portraits. Durham's cathedral and riverside, and the bridges of the Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside, give a strong urban alternative.

Summer evenings are long here, with light lingering late, which gives plenty of time for relaxed portraits. Winter days are short, so photographers will often suggest an earlier ceremony or portraits straight afterwards. The coast can be breezy at any time of year, so it helps to have a sheltered spot in mind for group shots.

Practical tips

If your venue is in rural Northumberland, check whether your photographer is happy to travel and how travel and any overnight stay are charged. Ask how they would work if it rains, and whether your venue has good indoor spots with natural light.
