Plenty of weddings in the East of England take place in barns, marquees and country gardens, and that shapes what many brides look for: relaxed lace, soft chiffon, boho details and dresses that will not mind a walk across a lawn. The region also has historic halls, churches and city hotels where a more formal gown feels right, so there is no single local style.

Where to shop

Bridal shops are found throughout the region, in towns and cities including Cambridge, Norwich, Chelmsford, Ipswich and St Albans. Distances in Norfolk and Suffolk can be considerable, so it is worth grouping appointments into one day. Hertfordshire and Essex brides sometimes also visit London, which is easily reached by train.

A sensible timeline

Starting your search around a year before the wedding gives you room to try different styles without pressure. Once you order, many dresses are made for you, which can take several months. Alterations then follow, often over two or three fittings in the run-up to the wedding.
