Planning a wedding in Cambridgeshire

Few counties combine historic architecture and open landscape quite like Cambridgeshire. Cambridge is famous for its university buildings, riverside meadows and the Backs, where college lawns run down to the River Cam. Ely, a small city on a rise above the Fens, is dominated by its cathedral, and Peterborough has a striking cathedral of its own. Around them, the flat fenland stretches out with big skies that photographers love, especially at sunset.

The county also has plenty of quieter places. Huntingdon, St Neots and Eaton Socon sit along the Great Ouse, while March, Wisbech, Whittlesey and Chatteris give a more rural, fenland feel. Wisbech in particular has fine Georgian buildings along its river.

Venue styles

Couples here choose from country houses, thatched village pubs, barn conversions, riverside spaces, city hotels and marquees on farmland. Cambridge itself can be busy and parking is tight in the centre, so check access and drop-off arrangements early if you are marrying in the city.

Getting there

Peterborough and Huntingdon are on the East Coast Main Line, and Cambridge has fast trains to London. The A14 and A1 cross the county, and the M11 links Cambridge to London. Stansted Airport is just over the border in Essex.

Timing and practicalities

Cambridge hotels fill up around university events, especially graduation season in early summer, and the city is busy with visitors through the warmer months. If you have a summer date, reserve guest rooms early or look at nearby towns.

  • Prices vary with the day of the week and the time of year.
  • Fenland can be exposed and windy, so plan marquee and outdoor arrangements with that in mind.
  • For a civil ceremony, give notice at your local register office and make sure your venue is approved premises.
