The Hoe, the broad open space looking over Plymouth Sound, is a classic spot for wedding photographs, with the red and white stripes of Smeaton's Tower as a landmark. The cobbled lanes and harbour of the Barbican add character, and the restored naval buildings at Royal William Yard give a grand waterside setting.
Plymouth is surrounded by dramatic landscapes. Dartmoor is to the north-east, with granite tors and open moorland, and across the Tamar lies the Cornish coast, including the parkland and shoreline of Mount Edgcumbe.
Weather can change rapidly on the coast and the moor, and both are often windy. A photographer who knows the area will have sheltered alternatives ready and can advise on footwear. Sunsets over the Sound can be striking in summer and early autumn.
Some waterfront developments, historic sites and parks ask for professional photography to be arranged in advance. On Dartmoor, consider access, ground conditions and the time needed to reach a location.
Many South West photographers travel across Devon and Cornwall, and summer is the busiest season. If you want a particular photographer, contacting them a year or more before your date is wise.
