Planning a wedding in Lancashire

Rolling fells, rich farmland and a long stretch of coast give Lancashire a lot of variety for weddings. The Ribble Valley and the Forest of Bowland, a protected landscape of moorland and wooded valleys, are popular with couples looking for countryside venues, and Pendle Hill rises above the east of the county.

Preston is Lancashire's city and has a good range of hotels and function venues. Lancaster has its castle, priory and historic streets near the River Lune, and nearby Morecambe looks out over Morecambe Bay, which is known for its sunsets. On the Fylde coast, Blackpool brings its tower, promenade and seaside entertainment, while Lytham St Annes has a more genteel feel with its green and seafront. Towns such as Leyland, Accrington, Skelmersdale and Chorley add further options.

Venue styles

Country house hotels, farm barns, coastal hotels, golf clubs, historic halls and marquees are all common here. Rural venues in the Ribble Valley and Bowland often have wonderful views but limited public transport, so plan how guests will get home.

Getting there

The M6 runs north to south through the county, with the M55 to Blackpool and the M65 heading east. Preston and Lancaster are both on the West Coast Main Line, giving direct trains from London and Scotland. Manchester and Liverpool airports are within reach.

Timing

Blackpool is busy through the summer and during the Illuminations, which run into the autumn, so book accommodation on the coast early. Weather on the fells can be wet and windy, so ask venues about indoor alternatives.

• Prices vary with the season and the day of the week.
• For a civil ceremony, give notice at your local register office and check that your venue is approved premises.
