Planning a wedding in Hampshire

Hampshire is a large county with a wide range of wedding settings. The New Forest National Park offers heathland, ancient woodland and roaming ponies; the South Downs reach into the east of the county; and the Solent coastline brings harbours, sailing towns and sea views. Add the cathedral city of Winchester, the maritime heritage of Portsmouth and plenty of farmland and estates in between, and couples have a lot to choose from.

Popular venue styles

Country houses, barns, manor farms and hotels are found throughout the county, while waterside venues along the Solent and the rivers of the Test and Itchen valleys suit couples who want something calmer. Weddings in the New Forest can feel especially rural, but ask about access, parking and any restrictions that apply on forest land.

Travel for guests

The M3 links Basingstoke and Winchester with London, the M27 runs along the south coast, and Southampton has an airport. Rail services reach most of the main towns. Distances across Hampshire can be bigger than they look, so when guests are coming from different directions, choose accommodation close to the venue and share clear travel notes.

Timing your wedding

Summer is busy, and the New Forest and coastal towns attract holidaymakers, which affects guest accommodation and road traffic. Sailing events around the Solent can also fill rooms on the coast. Late spring and early autumn are good alternatives, with softer light for photographs. Prices vary with the day of the week and season.

Legal requirements

In England, civil ceremonies must be held at a register office or approved premises, and couples give notice at their local register office. The Hampshire register offices can confirm notice requirements and availability for your chosen date.

Suppliers in Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester and Basingstoke usually travel throughout the county and into Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and West Sussex.
