Planning a wedding in Gloucestershire
Much of Gloucestershire lies within the Cotswolds, and its golden stone villages, dry-stone walls and rolling hills attract couples from all over the country. The county offers more than the classic Cotswold look, though. The Forest of Dean, west of the River Severn, brings ancient woodland and a quieter, wilder feel, while Gloucester and Cheltenham offer cathedral, Regency and town-centre settings.
Venue styles
Barns, country houses, manor houses, estates and hotels are common, and there are plenty of historic churches, including Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral, which also make striking backdrops for photographs. Marquee weddings on private land are popular in the Cotswolds, though they require more planning around power, toilets, catering and access.
Travel for guests
The M5 runs north to south past Gloucester and Cheltenham, and the M4 serves the south of the county. Trains reach Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Kemble near Cirencester. Many Cotswold venues are rural, so arranging transport from town hotels is wise.
Busy periods
The Cotswolds draw large numbers of visitors in spring and summer. Cheltenham's major horse racing festival in March fills hotels across the area, so avoid that week or book guest rooms very early if you choose it. Autumn is a lovely time for weddings here, with warm colours on the stone. Prices vary with the day of the week and season.
Legal requirements
For a civil ceremony in England, the venue must be a register office or approved premises, and you will each need to give notice at your local register office. The Gloucestershire register office can confirm notice periods and ceremony availability. Note that some towns, such as Yate, Kingswood and Chipping Sodbury, fall under South Gloucestershire, which has its own register service.
Suppliers here often travel to Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire, so widen your search if needed.
