Timber-framed buildings, the River Avon and the spire of Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare is buried, give Stratford-upon-Avon a storybook quality. The Bancroft Gardens beside the river, with swans and narrowboats nearby, are a popular spot for portraits, and the riverside walk towards the church offers quieter views.
The town sits close to the northern edge of the Cotswolds, and the Warwickshire countryside, with Warwick and its castle nearby, gives more rural options.
Stratford welcomes large numbers of visitors, especially in summer and at weekends, and the town centre and riverside can be crowded. Early-morning or weekday sessions are usually calmer. Discuss with your photographer how to keep portraits relaxed when passers-by are around.
Late spring and summer bring lush greenery by the river and long evenings. Autumn colour along the Avon is lovely. The river can flood after heavy rain, which may affect riverside paths, so a backup location is useful. In winter, light fades early.
Church grounds, historic houses and private estates often have their own arrangements for professional photography. Your photographer can check what applies.
Photographers from across Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands cover Stratford. Book a year or more ahead for a summer Saturday.
