Water runs through much of Reading's appeal for photographers. The Thames and the Kennet and Avon Canal offer towpaths, locks and reflections, and the riverside meadows upstream feel a world away from the town centre. Forbury Gardens and the ruins of Reading Abbey give a historic setting close to the shops and station.
Many couples marrying in the area also look at the Chiltern Hills to the north and the riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, where boats and willows make classic English backdrops.
Late spring and summer bring lush green riverbanks and long evenings. Early autumn often gives warm, low light with fewer crowds. In winter, mist over the river can be atmospheric, but daylight is limited, so plan outdoor portraits early.
Henley's summer regatta season brings large crowds and pressure on accommodation, which is worth checking if you are planning a riverside wedding in that area.
Private estates, some gardens and historic sites ask professional photographers to request permission beforehand. Towpaths are public, but they can be busy with walkers and cyclists, so allow extra time.
Reading is well connected by rail and motorway, so photographers from across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and beyond cover the area. Popular Saturdays are often reserved a year or more ahead.
