Capturing Personalities- Not Poses!
Portsmouth is built around its harbour, and many wedding portraits here make the most of the water. The Spinnaker Tower rises above the waterfront, while Old Portsmouth's Round Tower and fortifications look straight out over the harbour mouth to the Solent. Ferries and naval ships passing by add scale and movement.
Southsea's long seafront, its Common and the gardens along the promenade provide space and greenery. On a clear day you can see across to the Isle of Wight.
The seafront is exposed, and breezes are common in every season. Discuss sheltered spots for group photographs and consider how veils and hair will hold up. Summer sunsets over the water can be beautiful, and quieter evenings are often the best time for portraits.
Summer weekends and major events can make Southsea busy. The historic dockyard and some heritage sites have their own rules for professional photography, so ask before planning a shoot there. Parks and public promenades are generally easier.
Photographers who work across Hampshire and West Sussex regularly cover Portsmouth. Popular Saturdays from late spring to early autumn often book a year or more in advance. If your venue is on the island, check travel times for guests and suppliers during busy periods.
